My Cello Suite in G Minor is a collection of five short movements; Prelude, Courante, Sarabande, Minuet, and Jig, inspired by the music of the Baroque period, particularly the solo cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach.
I didn't begin this project with the intention of writing a cello suite. I simply started composing, experimenting with melodies, harmonies, and the possibilities of a single instrument. As the music developed, I found myself writing in a distinctly Baroque style, and eventually the individual pieces became a complete suite.
Looking back, perhaps the inspiration came from my years studying music composition at the University of Idaho. During that time, I enjoyed performing Bach's cello suites on my viola. Those beautiful works have stayed with me over the years, and I suspect some of that influence found its way into this music.
The Recording
I was fortunate to have my good friend Raquel Barrios, a cellist with the Panamá National Symphony, record the complete suite.
Raquel and I have worked together for years, and she has performed on several of my earlier FiddleJoe albums. Her musicianship and expressive playing bring these compositions to life, and I'm pleased to share her performances alongside the written music.
